The goal of the project is to develop novel terahertz devices (modulators and detectors) with record-breaking performance to enable realisation of next-generation communication systems in the terahertz frequency range. The work is part of the EPSRC programme grant Teracom (external link), a collaborative project involving the University of Leeds, University College London, and Swansea University, which aims to develop future wireless communications in the terahertz range.
The role will include:
- Developing, designing, and simulating terahertz devices that rely on novel physical phenomena to achieve unprecedented performance in terahertz modulation and detection.
- Fabricating the samples (field effect transistor type terahertz devices with a focus on the gallium nitride material system) in a semiconductor cleanroom in the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials at Swansea University.
- Characterising the new devices on existing setups, expanding and building new experimental systems for device measurements with terahertz sources.
- Presenting the results on project meetings, writing up and publishing research outcomes in international peer-reviewed journals.
Experience in the areas of terahertz physics, RF and THz device engineering, cleanroom fabrication, semiconductor technology, and numerical finite element modelling is welcome.
CISM is a cutting-edge research centre and semiconductor fabrication facility combining expertise from physics, chemistry, and engineering. It is designed for scalable fabrication of novel III-V semiconductors, located in the beautiful city of Swansea, close to the beach, and is embedded in the South Wales Compound Semiconductor Cluster with many connections to local semiconductor industry.
